Refurbished Dovedale Leisure Centre Reopens in Moulsham

Refurbished Dovedale Leisure Centre Reopens in Moulsham

The newly refurbished Dovedale Leisure Centre has officially reopened in Moulsham following a £2.3 million transformation project delivered on time and on budget.

Located on Chelmsford College’s Moulsham Street campus, the centre continues to operate as a partnership between Chelmsford City Council and the college, serving both students and the wider public.

After closing in June 2025, the site underwent significant refurbishment and remodelling, bringing it in line with other council-run facilities including Riverside Leisure Centre and Chelmsford Sport and Athletics Centre.

£2.3m Investment in Health and Wellbeing

The upgrade was funded through Chelmsford’s Community Infrastructure Levy (paid by housing developers), the council’s capital programme, and Chelmsford College.

Originally built in 1973, the centre had only seen minor upgrades over the years and was in need of modernisation. Plans for the refurbishment were shaped by feedback from members, local clubs and students, who called for improved gym facilities, a broader range of fitness classes and extended public access hours.

New Gym and Expanded Studio Space

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a new 32-station gym, equipped with the latest Technogym and Exigo machines. The upgraded space supports strength training, cardio and functional fitness for users of all ages and abilities.

The existing first-floor studio has been modernised with a new AV lighting and sound system, and an additional studio has been created to expand the class timetable. The updated programme now includes more morning sessions and a wider variety of activities — from Body Pump and circuits to yoga and dance aerobics.

Extended Public Opening Hours

Dovedale remains a dual-use facility, with Chelmsford College students having exclusive access at certain times during term. However, public access hours have been expanded, particularly midweek mornings.

During term-time:

Out of term-time, weekday daytime access is extended. Members will also benefit from parking permits to ease on-street parking when the car park is full.

Wider Improvements Across the Site

Alongside the gym and studios, visitors will find:

Energy efficiency has also been improved with the installation of air source heat pumps, LED lighting and a new plant room. Accessibility upgrades mean the gym is now fully accessible for wheelchair users and those with mobility aids.

Benefits for Students and the Community

As well as supporting public members and local sports clubs, the upgraded centre enhances facilities for Chelmsford College students, particularly those studying sport, physical activity and performing arts.

Centre Manager Richard Nicholas said the aim is to create a welcoming, motivating space for both experienced gym-goers and those new to fitness.
