About

Sanctus Homeless Charity Chelmsford – Supporting Vulnerable People with Dignity and Hope

Sanctus is a Chelmsford-based homeless charity founded in 2011 by two local philanthropists who remain active trustees. Born from compassion and personal experience of homelessness, Sanctus was created to offer food, warmth, and friendship to those struggling on the streets of Chelmsford. What began as free evening meals in a small café on Broomfield Road quickly evolved into a full-day refuge and lifeline for people experiencing hardship.

From Café to Community Hub

After starting out by serving home-cooked meals, it soon became clear that homelessness was far more complex than hunger alone. Sanctus began offering advocacy, benefits support, signposting, and wellbeing activities, helping people rebuild their confidence and stability. The café became a safe, welcoming space where friendships flourished and isolation was replaced with community.

In 2019, following years of growth, Sanctus launched the Sanctus Hub – a dedicated support centre run by a small professional team alongside partner agencies. The Hub provides one-to-one help and guidance while the café continues to serve as the gateway for people seeking support, food, and companionship.

Resilience Through Change

When the pandemic struck in 2020, Sanctus was recognised as an essential service and kept its doors open to feed and support Chelmsford’s most vulnerable residents. The charity even operated a free meal delivery service for those temporarily housed in local hotels, ensuring no one went hungry during lockdown.

That same year, Sanctus made the bold decision to move to larger premises on Broomfield Road, tripling its space. The new facility, which opened in July 2021, includes seating for over 60 guests, private rooms for the Hub, and shared areas used by other local charities and support organisations. This collaboration has created a vital safety net of care, offering food, advice, counselling, and practical help under one roof.

Powered by People and Compassion

Today, Sanctus employs a small but passionate team — including one former service user and two staff members employed through the ECL Learning Disabilities Programme — supported by more than 60 volunteers. Together, they prepare thousands of hot meals, provide emotional and practical support, and help people move forward with independence and dignity.

The charity continues to face growing demand, particularly due to the energy and cost-of-living crisis, but remains committed to helping anyone in need. None of this would be possible without the generosity of the local community — every donation, act of kindness, and hour volunteered makes a difference.

Looking Ahead

From its humble beginnings in a small café to its thriving community hub today, Sanctus Homeless Charity Chelmsford stands as a beacon of hope for people facing homelessness and hardship across Essex. With continued community support, Sanctus will keep enriching lives, building trust, and offering the help and friendship that everyone deserves.
