Mabel & Friends Day Retreat is a rural haven for your canine companions that offers comfort and care in the tranquil Essex countryside. At our doggy day care just outside of Chelmsford we treat every dog like family, giving them everything they need to make sure they feel at home whilst in our care.

Luxury dog retreat

Mabel & Friends is home to a generously sized and excellently equipped day centre that features a wealth of indoor and outdoor activity space. We have over 2,600 sq ft of secure indoor space and over half an acre of secure grassed area outdoors, meaning there’s more than enough space for our guests to sniff out and explore while they play and stretch their legs.

We have a fully qualified team that operates on a maximum staff:dog ratio of 1:8. This ensures that they’re able to deliver a high standard of care across the board, and keeps levels of attention consistent across all of our guests. We also have a good understanding of the specialist care of Brachycephalic breeds including Pug, English and French Bulldog, Boxer, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Boston Terrier, Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso.

No dog goes home dirty no matter the time of year! All dogs are washed down if they’ve been playing in wet and muddy fields, they will then have robes on to dry and be put in the lounge to relax. This ensures they are sent home clean and sweet smelling after a fun and relaxing day.

If you opt for our canine taxi option you’ll be please to know that it’s fully fitted out with air flow/heating/air conditioning, and the crates are fitted with rubber flooring to transport your pup safely and comfortably.


What we offer

Our canine taxi services offer dog day care pick up and drop off to homes nearby, or one of our nominated local train stations. We chauffeur pups about in our fully fitted out vans, which feature air flow, heating and air conditioning, as well as crates with rubber flooring. And don’t worry all pups are dropped off home clean after a busy day at the retreat.

Expert Styling & Grooming

Our grooming and styling services send your dogs home looking and smelling their best. Mabel & Friends day retreat is home to a purpose-built salon that’s fully equipped to meet any owner’s request.

Our service includes specialist breed standard styling, which tailors the grooming to the unique needs and characteristics of different dog breeds. We can accommodate any canine, just speak to our experienced grooming staff if there’s a specific style you’d like.

Do you care for dogs with allergies

Of course! We try to accommodate all conditions that dogs may have, and care for them accordingly.

What is your policy on intact males?

For day care access all adult dogs must be neutered. As a guide, we recommend small breed puppies at 6-9 months and larger breed puppies at 15-18 months. Advice on this can be sourced from your vet as these guidelines can vary according to breed.
