A Little About Hot Box Live

Hot Box Live has been a cornerstone of Chelmsford’s independent music, poetry, and drag scene since opening its doors in 2016. From the very beginning, the venue has offered a safe, welcoming space where people of all ages can come together to experience live performance, creativity, and community.

Over the years, Hot Box Live has become a trusted hub for music lovers, performers, and creatives looking for something different from the mainstream venue circuit.

Supporting Live Music & Emerging Artists in Chelmsford

One of Hot Box Live’s core aims has always been to bring fresh and diverse talent to Chelmsford. Historically, many UK touring artists bypassed the city, often travelling directly between Southend and Colchester. Hot Box Live has helped change that by placing Chelmsford firmly on the touring map.

By welcoming artists who might not traditionally perform in the city, Hot Box Live has played a key role in broadening Chelmsford’s cultural offering and strengthening its reputation as a destination for live music and performance.

A Venue Built for Community

Hot Box Live blends classic, old-school venue values with modern production quality.


The space features:

  1. A bar stocking over 700 different alcoholic drinks

  2. Professional lighting and a state-of-the-art sound system

  3. A varied programme including live gigs, poetry events, drag shows, quiz nights, and chess evenings

Accessibility and inclusivity are central to the venue’s ethos, ensuring that everyone feels welcome, whether they’re on stage or in the audience.

A Community Interest Company

Hot Box Live operates as a Community Interest Company (CIC). Any income generated is reinvested directly into the venue and its events, with a particular focus on supporting minority voices and events that may not be commercially profitable.

This approach allows Hot Box Live to champion creativity, diversity, and grassroots culture, while continuing to serve the wider Chelmsford community.

Our Philosophy

The venue’s purpose is perhaps best summed up by a message received from Babalon Anon, which reflects Hot Box Live’s approach to art, artists, and community:

There is often a gap between artists and the community.

That gap is bridged when organisations provide artists with a platform to connect openly and freely.

When artists are allowed to express themselves without restriction, their work can be better understood.

In turn, this helps organisers curate meaningful events.

Art is at its most powerful when it benefits the community — and when that happens, the community becomes part of the art itself.

This philosophy continues to guide everything Hot Box Live does, from programming events to supporting performers and audiences alike.
