Cool to be Kind – Spreading Compassion and Support Across Chelmsford and Essex

Cool to be Kind is a volunteer-led charitable organisation based in Essex, dedicated to helping those facing homelessness, hardship, and social isolation. Since its founding in 2015, the group has grown into a powerful community movement built on empathy, generosity, and a shared commitment to making a difference across Chelmsford and beyond.

How It All Began

The charity’s journey started with The Rucksack Project, launched in response to the growing number of people sleeping rough in Chelmsford. Volunteers across Essex came together to collect and distribute essential items such as warm clothing, toiletries, and blankets to those in need.

Thanks to the incredible support of the local community, the project quickly grew — in 2016 and 2017, more than 400 rucksacks filled with vital supplies were donated by over 300 compassionate individuals. This outpouring of kindness laid the foundation for what would become the Cool to be Kind initiative.

Growing Into a Community Network

Founded by Marion Booth, Jo Hindley, Kellie Jones, Brian McGovern, and Dan Skeates, Cool to be Kind has evolved into a recognised force for good throughout Essex. Working in partnership with other outreach groups and charities, the organisation provides ongoing practical and emotional support for people experiencing homelessness and poverty.

In 2022, Cool to be Kind launched Street Support Chelmsford, a free online directory designed to connect vulnerable individuals and carers with essential local services, including food banks, shelters, healthcare, and financial help. The platform plays a vital role in supporting those affected by homelessness and the rising cost of living across the Chelmsford area.

Continuing the Mission

In recent years, Cool to be Kind has taken major steps toward becoming a fully registered charity, earning widespread recognition for its work. Its team of dedicated volunteers continues to grow, strengthening partnerships and extending outreach to meet increasing community needs.
