My room smelled of damp so had to air it out with the window open for an hour or two after I came in, there is a lot of dust around the bottom of the furniture and skirting boards etc are grimy. It’s quite tired looking with holes in the carpet and sockets falling out of the wall, definitely in the bottom tier of the premier inns I have stayed in. Location is good as it’s part of the services just off the main A road. Food came quickly and was up to the usual premier inn standard. The receptionist & waitresses were also smiling & friendly.
Highlights - Really comfy beds, we had a family room with the double and two single beds made up, and a travel cot. Every bed was comfortable and we all slept well. Breakfast was lovely, well-cooked and attentive service, perhaps on the pricey side if you don't eat much, but my husband ate enough to get his moneys worth! Downsides - thin walls and noisy neighbours, who to be fair were just talking or on the phone, but it was very loud! Room was very dated and not the cleanest. Everything just felt a bit, grimy and old. We were next to an internal door, so that kept banging closed and it also made our room door move slightly which was unsettling for my kids. Parking is extortionate at £7.00 in my opinion. No kids menu available which is a shame. Great for a quick place to sleep and eat breakfast if you're passing through the area, but I wouldn't be desperate to come back.
Was there only two nights. The kitchen wasn't open on the first night due to equipment breaking, the morning after my second night, no hot water so I couldn't shower due to the boiler breaking down. Feel like at times they didn't have enough staff to manage the front and the bar, think the place needs some major investment in equipment. The room for a premier inn was looking tired, the bathroom needing a refurbishment. The staff were pleasant enough, feel it wasn't their fault per say. Other things that annoyed me were cheap energy saving bulbs that barely illuminate the bedroom and no power source adjacent the bed where is would be practical for charging my phone.
We had to find an accessible room at the last minute after being told the room we booked with another hotel chain was not avaible. From arrival to departure we were treated with respect and care by all staff, especially Joe & Grace. We had a wonderful meal in the resturant (highly reccomend the steak especially if Chef Jon is in the Kitchen. Highly reccomend this hotel just a short drive from Chelmsford town centre.
As a regular customer of Premier inns we found the service and information of the Springfield Chelmsford hotel very disappointing . Before staying we dropped off our luggage, and came back in the evening to stay overnight, having breakfast we departed, but no mention at any time of our stay about the parking charges which were due for staying at this hotel were mentioned consequently we have received a parking fine. This is the only Premier Inn we have stayed which evidently charges for its parking ,the staff. Should be trained to notify its customers about this unusual practice.. if you are thinking of staying here TAKE NOTE- infamous Horizon parking company will fine you for driving in and out of their car park!!
